Artist Biography

Paul Roche is an Irish born artist who has been exhibiting professionally since 1999. Living & working in England throughout the nineties, Paul spent five years as an advertising layout artist in Manchester and obtained a Science degree from the University of Birmingham. Returning to his native Wexford in 1998 he began substitute teaching in elementary schools while studying a year long art & design course at Wexford Vocational College. His paintings quickly gained recognition and Paul worked on theatre set design, mosaic projects, murals and architectural renderings. This firmly established him within the arts community in the Southeast of Ireland. He has exhibited at gallery spaces & festivals including The Works International Visual Arts Society, The Irish National Heritage Park and Opera Festival, Wexford.

In 2003 Paul moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he continued his involvement in the arts community through exhibits, public works & collaborating with artists in Western Canada. His paintings are held in private & corporate collections in Ireland, the U.K. & Canada.

 

Artist Statement

Essentially, I observe everyday objects and the landscape around me in a way that creates clearly defined shapes, lines and images. Particular attention is given to line and its collaboration with colour in a manner that suggests a dynamism and narrative between the painting and the observer. The deliberate juxtaposition of bold colour combinations within these 'borders' allows a glimpse of something playful and familiar, yet suggests an unknown quality that allows the imagination to wander.

In the series titled "Neutral spaces" (2016-19) pure shape and integrity of line blends with distorted perspective & clean white zones. This independent play of forms and flat geometric spaces allow the examination of our own reality versus the abstract. Amidst everyday life we seek out the territories or locations that allow us to disengage and take time to breathe.
